31 years

candle_necklace

TOMORROW I TURN 31. thirty one! when did i turn thirty? last year was whisked away by a gusty baby wind. i do remember waking up a year ago today with a very high fever and intense, searing pain in both breasts. thinking it was the flu, i tried plugging along carrying for my 3 week old baby. as the day progressed, and breastfeeding became near impossible, i made an appointment to see my doctor the following day, my birthday, to find out i had mastitis. happy birthday! that was misery and i almost quit nursing at that point, but kept plugging along {my motto last year}. tommy made the most of my mastitis birthday by working from home, changing all of wrennie’s diapers, treating me to in-n-out and rockbottom brewery take-out, AND buying me 10+ bouquets of flowers {no exaggeration, our home was filled with floral arrangements in every corner}. i felt like a very special girl despite the pain, tears, so many tears, and reoccurring bouts of postpartum depression.

lesson learned from last year’s birthday: it can always be worse + your birthday is as special as you make it {unless you’re married to tommy or have my mumcakes as a mom, and it’s always, always, always special}. here’s to my thirty first year tomorrow. happy birthday to me!

oh, anthropologie sent me that birthday candle necklace along with an enticing discount…which led to this overwhelming decision. i’m definitely wearing my birthday dress tomorrow with the necklace.

formspring

in case you haven’t notice, on the right side of the page i added a tiny link to formspring, the latest craze in the land of internets + social media popularity*. surely, you’re going to ask, why did you join little lady? to which i’ll respond with a question, why not, friend? and why are you calling me little lady? please don’t.

if you’ve ever wondered something about me, tommy, the girl, our home, my work/art, background, beliefs, or where i got the inspiration to wear a ridiculously high side ponytail to the grocery store on monday…now you can ask {anonymous or not}. i could be entering into some craziness, seeing the comments left by some of you freaks are outrageous {though you do make me laugh on occasion}, but i’m willing to take the risk since it sounds like fun and i’ve always been game for sincerity, honesty, weirdness and humor.

*i’m kidding about this because you don’t have to be popular to join or ask, it’s just a matter of whether or not someone will ask…which if you think about it, is a lot like high school…and prom, when no one asked me to go, so i asked this jerk andy who was stoned the entire night, so i just danced by myself. i’m liz lemon. and i know what you’re thinking – no, i won’t ask myself questions anonymously – i’d rather have a blank page than do that.

ONE OF MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE daily reads, elephantine, has written a nice post about my work. elephantine is full of the most delightful eye candy, and amusing snippets from rachel’s life — plus her pup bodhi is the cutest thing ever — double plus, rachel has an incredible etsy shop and i dream of owning this, this, and this {pretty much everything in the shop, tommy}.

here’s the fun news friends: rachel kindly offered to host a giveaway of my stationery. you must be thinking, wha? are you serious girl? and i say, yeah i’m serious girl! you could win everything you see above {blue leaves folded notes + branches gift tags + i’ll throw in some fun surprises AND draw all over the outside of the package to give your postman a hardy chuckle}.

so go on over and enter the giveaway!

so very nice

a few weeks ago tommy forwarded me a message from our friend eric, sharing news that his coworker wrote a nice note about me on the design blog jolie jolie design. we had sent eric a birthday invitation to wren’s party, which he then took to work, tinyprints, so naturally, it was a blushingly sweet surprise that someone from such a fun, creative company would take notice of our little wren’s birthday birdies. i’m still blushing just a bit and feeling encouraged to keep moving forward with my illustrations.

now if only we could add two extra hours to the day purely for drawing and painting and blogging. if only!

and if you’re wondering why i haven’t posted pictures of wren’s birthday invitations {i did on twitter, you should follow me}, well, it’s because i’m working on it. i am! along with five other posts that are tardy – way past due – late – old news. but for my own sake, i’ll still post them anyway.

well, i guess i lied

CLEARLY, I’M IN A SEASON IN LIFE where i just can’t find the time for little things i used to have time for…catching dust bunnies…filing my nails…or paperwork since we’re on the topic…sketching happy ghosts…eating something other than string cheese and coffee…watching giada and ina in the afternoon and cooking one of their masterpieces…blogging. but i do have time for the important things…being a mom, and a wife, and present to friends and family. yes, important, indeed!

until then, i suppose fun little life updates will need to wait. perhaps until this weekend? for now,  a quick shop update {birthday bird stickers!}

update deux

OUR INTERNET IS BACK! i’ve been surviving off my iphone for the past week. which isn’t a bad thing, quite handy, and cute because i have kittycaller, and very nice for my tweets — but typing lengthy email responses, browsing the web, even making updates here has been near impossible. so i’m back. real updates soon!

may i be the first to say…HAPPY VALENTIMES! to you and yours and his and hers…

wren’s first birthday :: the cake

LITTLE MISS DID NOT EAT an ounce of cake! that’s okay though…mom and dad enjoyed it later that day.

wren’s first birthday :: party time

THE TURNOUT FOR THE PARTY was overwhelming and an absolute blast! little wren had no clue what was going on but enjoyed every minute. such a gracious little hostess, she was a delight and riot, even missing her afternoon nap without a fuss. we had so much fun and cannot wait to do it again next year – who knew throwing kid birthday parties would be so much fun?!

wren’s first birthday :: setup

first_birthday_setup

I SHOULD HAVE TAKEN BEFORE AND AFTER PICTURES because the transformation of that dark and dated clubhouse was a miracle. tommy and i were up well into the early morning hours decorating with paper birds, colorful paper chains, and my favorite piece, the happy birthday banner. my mom even joined in and quickly made a ridiculous amount of paper chains when we realized that we hadn’t made enough. i wish i had a picture of her doing it, she’s so cute and nimble. i also wish there were more pictures of the setup, but too much was going on before the party for me to capture all of our hard work.

if you couldn’t already tell, the theme is BIRDS, of course! if there was more time i was going hang paper birds from the ceiling, but i’m only human and that idea died at 3am when i could no longer keep my eyes open while sticking pictures of wren’s first year on the wall. we had so much fun decorating with the paper chains that i’m thinking of keeping up with the tradition every year. i spent five dollars on a stack of construction paper and was able to use it for all the paper birds, the chains, the flower arrangement covers, and the happy birthday banner.

wren’s party was a huge group effort, friends and family pitched in, making it special and very fun. one family let us borrow their large, round kid table. a friend went out of her way across town just to bring all the balloons. two other friends made two cakes the night before. the grandmas brought tons of food and prepared all my food when i realized there wasn’t enough time for me to get it all done! wren’s grandpa brought eight costco pizzas {and carried them by himself – his poor back – have you ever tried carrying just one?}. everyone loves wren and this party shows it!

update

this place may be quiet, but that certainly hasn’t been the case in the sanchez household. i’ve had very little time just to sit at the computer, or to even collect my thoughts, with so many wonderful life happenings blurring by us way too fast. tommy had a birthday (33!), and now our little wren is no longer a baby, but a toddler! she turned ONE on february 3rd. today i’m wrapping up the final details of her big birthday bash for tomorrow. once the party is a completed success – and i’m most positive it will be a smash – i’ll have a free moment to post lots of pictures of the party, the 10 + 11 month updates, home videos, and new illustrations i’ve somehow managed to find the time to create. talk to you soon…
